ELEVATING YOUR ROAD TRIP WITH 10 SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

August 15, 2023

Embarking on a road trip is an exciting adventure, a journey of exploration that allows us to connect with ourselves, nature, freedom and experience the beauty of the open road.

However, as conscious travelers, it’s our responsibility to minimize our impact on the environment even as we enjoy these journeys. My role is not to make you feel bad or to tell you stop but to share practical ways to make your road trips greener, ensuring that you can explore the world while leaving a positive footprint behind.

1. Choose fuel-efficiency transportation

Before you hit the road, consider the vehicle you’ll be driving. Opt for a fuel-efficient car or even an electric or hybrid vehicle if possible. These choices not only reduce your carbon emissions but also save you money on fuel costs.

During my last road trip in Spain, I had a hybrid Fiat 500 and that was a great experience. Good driving, less fuel expenses, same rental price.

I recommend RentalCars which allows you to search for a car either electric or hybrid. You can find really affordable prices.

2. Plan your route

Planning your route not only ensures you won’t miss any breathtaking sights but also helps you minimize unnecessary miles and fuel consumption. Use navigation apps to find the most efficient routes, avoiding congested areas and reducing your travel time.

My penchant lies with Google Maps, very reliable (which is not the case for bike routes).

You can also find some of my favorite roads in my ebooks.

3. Pack light and smart

A lighter load means better fuel efficiency. Pack only the essentials and avoid overloading your vehicle. This not only conserves fuel but also makes your journey more comfortable and organized.

I’ve learnt how to be minimalist with time, ask me for tips 😉

4. Reduce single-use plastics

One of the easiest ways to make your road trip more sustainable is to cut down on single-use plastics. Bring along reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and food containers. Additionally, consider using cloth bags for groceries instead of plastic bags.

You can find lots of sustainable travel gears here.

5. Choose eco-friendly accomodations

Opt for accommodations that prioritize sustainability. Look for hotels or motels with green certifications, or consider camping for a truly eco-friendly experience.

I am not too much into camping, especially when traveling solo. So to stay flexible and to be sure to fins a room, I like to use Booking.

Booking also rates accommodations according to their sustainability level as below.

6. Practice responsible waste management

Proper waste management is essential. Always dispose of your trash responsibly, recycling whenever possible. If you’re camping, follow Leave No Trace principles by packing out all your waste, even organic materials.

7. Be a e-driver

Instead of printing out maps, brochures, or travel guides, use digital alternatives. Utilize navigation apps, e-books, and online travel resources to reduce paper consumption. Plus, it’s more convenient to access information on your devices.

8. Practice mindful driving

Be a mindful driver by adhering to speed limits and following traffic rules. Aggressive driving not only puts you at risk but also increases fuel consumption and emissions. Smooth driving and gradual braking improve fuel efficiency.

9. Offset your carbon footprint

Consider offsetting the carbon emissions from your road trip by investing in carbon offset programs.

Carbon offset programs function on a simple premise: for every unit of carbon emitted, an equivalent unit is either reduced from the atmosphere or prevented from being released. This equilibrium is achieved through diverse projects that help reduce carbon emissions, such as reforestation or renewable energy projects.

10. Leave nature undisturbed

While exploring nature, follow the principles of Leave No Trace. Stay on designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and always pick up after yourself.

Your actions can help preserve the natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.
